My heart, O God, is steadfast;
I will sing and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love, higher than the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
(Psalm 108:1-5)
I "awakened the dawn" this morning. I woke up just after 4:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. The dogs thought it was great, but as I type this they are laid out next to me sleeping and one is snoring soundly. Waking up that early, I will admit that I didn't immediately begin praising God or singing about God's great love and faithfulness. Some caffeine later, however, it's starting to come together.
Often how we start our day sets the template for how our day will go. This psalm opens with the words: "My heart is steadfast." When so many different circumstances of life fly at us, how do we keep our hearts steadfast (or steady)? It's so easy to let outside forces dictate how we feel: weather, our daily schedule, other people we encounter, health concerns, money, family, and the list goes on. If those things control our hearts - our inner selves - we will be far from steadfast and we will never find peace.
So, what is this psalmist's solution to keeping a steadfast heart? Ground your heart in God. Sing God's praises. Focus on God's great love for you which is higher than the mountains. Remember God's faithfulness reaches to the skies. Pray that God be exalted among all nations and that God's glory covers the earth. Don't just wait until the end of the day to do these things. Awaken your day with them!
