This Sunday is Mother's Day and while I'm not generally a fan of consumer "Hallmark holidays" I am a fan when it comes to my mom.
Proverbs 31:25-26 - She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
My mom wasn't perfect (of course, neither was I) ... but she was a wonderful mother. She worked hard to make our house a home. She was a hard worker, thought of others more often than herself, and was the source of joy in our family. Until the day it dawned on me that she wasn't, my mom was strong and willing to take on about any task.
Our personalities were different but my mom instilled within me many of her best qualities. Some she taught me; others I learned by watching her. As I face new challenges and changes in life, I have found myself thinking about my mom. She passed away in 2019 but, due to dementia, we really lost her years before her death. I am grateful for her faith in me when I had little to no confidence in myself. I am grateful for her faith in God when I had no faith. Of the many things my mom did for me, I am most thankful for her prayers for me. I didn't know it at the time, but every day for years and years she prayed. There is a part of me that believes she is still praying.
I don't know your situation with your mother. My career as a prosecutor certainly taught me that not all mothers are loving. But I've also seen enough to know that it's not biology that makes a mother, it's love. I hope everyone reading this has experienced the love of a mother, grandmother, aunt, family friend, or "church mother" - and that you have given thanks for that love not through a Hallmark card but through the love you have shown others.
"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” -1 John 4:7.
Happy Mother's Day.
