Our meditation word for today is "free." We all like free things, and yet most of us are cynical enough to always be on the lookout for the hidden cost in what is being offered to us as free. Christ offers to set us free - and his offer is a gift without strings. What does it mean to be set free? First, it means to be released from bondage or captivity. Most of us have never been held captive in the literal sense of the word, and yet most of us are held captive by many things. We are all in bondage to sin, which is to say that we all do things we know go against God's will for our lives. And, we are all in bondage to death, that is, we all with someday die. Christ frees us from both sin and death. As Romans 8:1 says, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Christ frees us from death and offers everlasting life.
Second, being set free means to be unburdened or released from those things that hold us back or down. This is where most of us find ourselves on a daily basis. We are technically free, but we allow ourselves to be held captive by the expectations of others or even our own expectations. We lose our focus on God and lose out on the relationship God wants to have with us. Christ offers us freedom from expectations.
Finally, being "free" means having the ability to live according to our true calling. God created each of us with a uniqueness that affirms the diversity of all life. Each of us are not only unique, we were born with a unique purpose that God is calling us to fulfill. But before we can live fully into God's plan for us, we need to let go of our fear of failure and our determination to do things our way.
Are you afraid of what God might be calling you to do? It may not seem logical but letting go of that fear and living in obedience to God's will is the very thing that will set you free. What do you think?
