he Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
your throne is established from of old;
    you are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
    the floods have lifted up their voice;
    the floods lift up their roaring.
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
    more majestic than the waves of the sea,
    majestic on high is the Lord!
Your decrees are very sure;
    holiness befits your house,
    O Lord, for evermore.
(Ps. 93)

Ps. 93 opens with words of confidence in God - God is strong, majestic, the creator, and is everlasting. But then some doubt seems to enter in: there are floods, and the waters are roaring and rising. I think the psalmist is expressing, poetically, what we often feel. God is more powerful and wise than we can imagine. But does God care when the storms of life are threatening me? Does God care that I get depressed sometimes? Does God care when I'm afraid? Does God care when I'm lonely? Does God care when I hurt?

The psalmist isn't asking all those questions, but isn't this what the "floods" that come against us look like? Maybe you are struggling with a "flood" right now, and you're tired to trying to hold back the waters on your own. Does God care? The psalmist ends Ps. 93 with words of confidence in God. God is stronger than the flood and is able to conquer the rising waves. We can turn to God for help, and trust in his holiness (that God will keep his promises).

Prayer: God, when the flood waters of life are rising and threatening to overtake me, help me remember that nothing is more powerful than you. Help me to stay strong in my faith and to trust that you are never absent from me and that you care for me. Amen.
