I thought how I would set you among my children and give you a pleasant land, the most beautiful heritage of all the nations. And I thought you would call to me, “My Father,” and would not turn from following me. Instead, as a faithless wife leaves her husband, so you have been faithless to me, O house of Israel, says the Lord.
Return, O faithless children, I will heal your faithlessness. “Here we come to you, for you are the Lord our God. Truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel."
Yesterday's sermon on Lessons from Jeremiah focused on God's call to the people: "Return to me." Hundreds of years before Jesus told the parable of the Prodigal Son, God, through the prophet Jeremiah, was telling people the same thing by reminding them of the abundant life God wanted for them. God saw the people trying to fulfill their longings and desires by doing things their way and running from one "quick fix" to another.
I don't think that we've changed much in the 2,500 years since Jeremiah. We have the same longings and desires as they had. We seek purpose, peace, health, comfort, love, and friendships. We look everywhere for answers except God. But just like God did for the Israelites years ago, so God does for us. God calls out to us, "Return to me!" God promises that no matter how far we've wandered away, He will never wander away from us. God is waiting to show us He is faithful.
Are there areas in your life where you've been making your own decisions and trying to fill the voids you find by yourself and without God? What would it look like to include God in the process? Just a thought...
