Have you heard the news about the total solar eclipse? If not, where have you been hiding? It's been all over the news lately in case you hadn't noticed. Businesses are closing for the afternoon, people are flocking to prime viewing areas, hotels are charging crazy rates, and eclipse events are planned. I bought my $1 pair of glasses, so I'm good to go!
Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God!" and that will be true today. The word “eclipse” doesn't appear in most biblical translations, but there are many different passages that seem to describe an eclipse. Times of "the darkening of the sun" were often viewed as signs of divine judgment or renewal. Today we understand that there is a scientific explanation for eclipses, but it was still God who created the world we see around us and allows us, especially on days like today, to marvel at His creation. Is there biblical significance to today's eclipse? Yes! "The heavens declare the glory of God!"
This morning, I close with the words of two great hymns. Here is the first verse of Isaac Watts’ “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”:
I sing the mighty power of God that made the mountains rise;
That spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.
“Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” in its second verse, gives the best summary of my meditation for this morning:
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness,
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Today, whether you see the eclipse in person or on media accounts, I encourage you to see it as a sign and a reminder of God's great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
