One of my “live-in” Bible passages is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” What do I mean when I say I “live in” these verses? I certainly don’t mean that I have perfected living them out in my life. What I mean is that I rely on them often to remind myself of certain truths and promises that are important to my identity as a follower of Christ. See, I don’t know about you but far too often I get focused on this life and my priorities and lose sight of what is most important. So, I have “live-in” verses to help me stay on track.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds me to place my ultimate trust in God when it comes to all aspects of my life. Notice that these verses don’t say we should trust in God a little bit or with the important things or when we are unsure of what to do next. We are to trust in God with all our heart – it’s an all-in commitment based on a trust relationship. It’s a reminder to me that I have faith enough to put my trust in God because my faith affirms that God loves me. These verses don’t promise me that my life will always be easy or that I will get everything I want, but there is a promise that God will make my paths straight. In other words, if I follow God’s plan for my life, a path will be made for me that will lead me to God.
I have many more “live-in” verses that I keep around me. Here are two more I would like to share. Psalm 51:10-12: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and sustain in me a willing spirit.” Philippians 4:6: “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”’
Do you have any “live-in” verses that guide and guard your faith? If not, I would encourage you to find a few. It may take a while, but as you read the Bible certain verses will keep speaking to you. Those will become your “live-in” verses, for a lifetime or for this season of your life. Once you find them, write them down on index cards, post them where you can see them, and/or download them on your phone or computer. What do you think?
